Oceangoing IT Infrastructure
IT Infrastructure for Open Sea Science
As Science Technology Officer on the RV Odyssey, Richard Jeong led the strategic design, procurement, and implementation of a vast array of scientific, electronic, communications, and practical systems and applications. He was responsible for overseeing their employment under dynamic, demanding conditions and ensured performance of these systems to exacting scientific standards.
He led the strategic design and implementation of all technology onboard and ashore, ranging from sonic multibeam systems to mission control infrastructure, and from networking to VOIP. With an initial procurement budget of $500K and an ongoing annual operating budget of $100K, he balanced resource allocation, cost-efficiency, and the rigorous demands of an ocean-going vessel, and handled the drydock repair of the $300K multibeam mapping system.
Rich was also responsible for ongoing operational support and technical troubleshooting for an extensive array of onboard systems, including submersibles, laboratories, and a full broadcasting studio, and provided support for personal crew devices, ensuring a seamless technology experience for all onboard.
For the cybersecurity needs of the organization, Rich implemented risk assessments, threat management, and mitigation strategies, providing peace of mind for the crew amidst the challenging oceanic conditions.
